THE STORY BEHIND NONPROFIT NARRATIVES
I’m Sheila. I bring a background in education, small business ownership, and graduate-level Information Technology coursework to a practical question: how can better information help a nonprofit do its work and share its impact?
My path to nonprofit work brought together education, small business ownership, and graduate-level coursework in Information Technology. When I became an Impact Coordinator at a small local nonprofit, those experiences found a shared purpose. I began by observing the work, exploring the data points we could capture, and reviewing the information the organization was already tracking.
Once I understood the organization’s needs, I selected a relational database and migrated its data into one connected system. I then used that system to streamline everyday workflows. Messages are now stored in a master log, with the relevant information emailed to recipients. Information for board members, funders, and other stakeholders is ready in seconds, making reporting simpler and public communications more meaningful.
Today, the database displays the organization’s information in real time, with data that can be shared on its website. I use that information to tell stories that connect the numbers to the mission—helping people understand the impact and inviting them to engage and give. That connection between the work, the information, and the story is the foundation of Nonprofit Narratives.
